Today, the House has adopted the Health Services Committee report, which recommended several measures to improve the Langalanga Sub-County Hospital.
The committee chaired by Hon Njuguna Mwaura conducted an assessment of the hospital’s services, achievements, challenges, and areas of improvement before making their recommendations.
The report acknowledged the hospital’s efforts to improve services through the introduction of weekend services and collaborations with neighbouring facilities to enhance its referral system.
The hospital management has also proactively addressed challenges, including understaffing and has plans to procure essential equipment and improve its water collection system.
To further improve services, the Health Services committee recommended that the County Government of Nakuru allocate more resources in the FY 2023/2024 towards the Langalanga Sub-County Hospital.
These resources should be used to recruit additional staff, including nurses, lab technicians, sonographers, and pharmacy technicians, and equip the facility with essential equipment such as delivery beds, resuscitators, autoclave machines, patient lockers, an x-ray machine, dental units, physiotherapy equipment, and a backup generator and laundry machine for the maternity ward.
The Committee also recommended that the facility should be fully automated, and a new structure built to create more space for service areas and inpatient wards. An additional ambulance should also be procured for the sub-county, and the incinerator should be upgraded to a bio-digester.
The committee recommended that the County Department of Health liaise with the Department of Lands and Physical Planning to fast-track the processing of the title deed. This will attract more development projects from partners.
The report also urged the County Government of Nakuru to demand reliable and timely supplies from KEMSA and fully operationalize the outpatient department to provide 24-hour service and the inpatient department.
Security services should be engaged to ensure that hospital resources and equipment are well taken care of at all times, and the County Government should consider setting up staff quarters for their officers.
It is now expected that the County Government of Nakuru will act on the committee’s recommendations. These measures will be a significant boost to the Langalanga Sub-County Hospital and the catchment population of 34,000 individuals who rely on its services.
