The House has adopted an Adhoc-Committee on COVID-19 Emergency Response report that has made recommendations to the County Executive on the matatu stages and Afraha market in the wake of the pandemic.
This is after the Committee made site visits to the new matatu stages; which are acting as holding grounds and the market which was moved to Afraha Stadium open ground.
The visits were aimed at checking on their status and conditions having relocated from their usual places.
The Committee observed that the stages were muddy, lacked water, sanitizers, and toilets.
They also lacked sheds, harassment of food handlers, insecurity, congestion hence the Matatu drivers and their clients were not adhering to Government laid down measures to combat the pandemic.
The Committee recommended the County Executive to hold a meeting with the representatives of the Matatu Sector for better management of the new stages and also consider views of the Matatu stakeholders anytime the stages are envisaged.
The Committee also wants enforcement officers to stop harassing food vendors, handlers, and matatu drivers.
It also recommended to the County Executive to construct sheds at the Show Ground and Kwa Jack Stage, allow at least two matatus from different Saccos to operate at the market in Afraha Stadium.
Other recommendations: County Executive to allow two matatus to carry passengers from their previous stages per day to mitigate losses experienced in their new stages, food vendors be allowed to sell packed food.
The County government also was asked to construct toilets with immediate effect, expedite the provision of water, and Murram the two stages and the market to improve poor road conditions.
The Committee is mandated to coordinate and act as a linkage between the Assembly and the County Government to combat COVID-19 pandemic.
