
The County Assembly of Nakuru is the legislative arm of the Nakuru County Government, established under Article 185 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010. It holds legislative authority within the county and is empowered to enact laws that support the effective delivery of county functions as outlined in the Fourth Schedule of the Constitution.
COMPOSITION
In accordance with Article 177 of the Constitution, the Assembly is composed of:
• Elected Members from each ward, with each ward forming a single-member constituency.
• Nominated Members to ensure no more than two-thirds of the Assembly is of the same gender.
• Representatives of marginalized groups, including youth and persons with disabilities, as prescribed by law.
• The Speaker, serving as an ex officio member.
These provisions promote inclusive representation, reflect Nakuru’s diversity, and uphold gender equity and social justice.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The County Assembly plays a central role in ensuring accountable, inclusive, and transparent governance. Its core functions include:
• Legislation: Enacting laws that support county development and service delivery.
• Oversight: Monitoring the County Executive to promote transparency and accountability.
• Budget and Plan Approval: Approving development plans and annual budgets, as per Article 207 of the Constitution.
• Appointments: Vetting and approving nominees for key county public offices.
• Public Participation: Engaging citizens in legislative processes, in line with Article 196, to promote openness and civic involvement.
